Overview

Welcome to Cancun

Cancun sits on the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico. What was a small fishing village in the 1970s has become Mexico's most visited tourist destination, drawing millions of visitors annually with its turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and abundance of resorts. But Cancun is more than just a resort town -- it is also a gateway to some of Mexico's most impressive archaeological sites and natural wonders.

The Hotel Zone

The Zona Hotelera is a 23-kilometer-long, L-shaped barrier island connected to the mainland by bridges. This strip is lined with all-inclusive resorts, shopping malls, restaurants, and nightclubs. The beaches along the Hotel Zone consistently rank among the most beautiful in the Caribbean, with powdery white sand and strikingly blue water.

Key areas within the Hotel Zone:

  • Punta Cancun -- The bend of the "7" shape, where many clubs and the convention center are located
  • Northern beaches -- Calmer waters, more sheltered from waves
  • Eastern beaches -- Facing the open Caribbean, with bigger waves and stronger currents

Downtown Cancun (El Centro)

Cancun's downtown is where locals live and work. It is more affordable than the Hotel Zone and offers authentic Mexican food, local markets like Mercado 28, and a different perspective on the city. Parque de las Palapas is the social heart of the downtown area.

Day Trips and Excursions

Cancun is the starting point for many of the Yucatan's top attractions:

  • Chichen Itza -- About 2.5 hours by road, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World
  • Isla Mujeres -- A 20-minute ferry ride to a laid-back island with snorkeling and quiet beaches
  • Cenotes -- Dozens of swim-worthy cenotes within a 1-2 hour drive
  • Tulum Ruins -- Clifftop Mayan ruins overlooking the Caribbean, about 2 hours south
  • Cozumel -- A world-class diving island reachable by ferry from Playa del Carmen

Nightlife

Cancun's nightlife is legendary, centered on the Hotel Zone's party strip. Major clubs include Coco Bongo (a Vegas-style show and nightclub), The City, and Mandala. Spring break season (February to March) is the busiest and loudest period.

Getting There

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is one of Mexico's busiest airports, with direct flights from most major North American and European cities. The airport is about 20 minutes from the Hotel Zone. ADO buses, private shuttles, and taxis connect the airport to the city.

Best Time to Visit

December through April offers dry, sunny weather with temperatures around 26-30 degrees Celsius. This is peak season with higher prices. The shoulder months of May and November can offer good weather with fewer crowds. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk in August and September.

Where to Stay

  • Budget -- Hostels and hotels in downtown Cancun, from $20-40 USD/night
  • Mid-range -- Hotels on the Hotel Zone or in Puerto Morelos, from $80-150 USD/night
  • All-inclusive -- Resorts in the Hotel Zone, from $150-500+ USD/night per person
