Overview
Welcome to Guanajuato
Guanajuato is one of Mexico's most visually striking cities. Built in a narrow ravine and spreading up the surrounding hillsides, the city is a cascade of brightly painted houses in every color imaginable -- orange, pink, yellow, turquoise, red. The state capital of Guanajuato, it has a population of roughly 185,000 and is home to the prestigious University of Guanajuato, which gives the city a youthful energy and vibrant nightlife.
The city's historic center and adjacent mines are a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for the city's role as one of the richest silver mining centers in colonial Mexico. Its most unusual feature is its network of underground tunnels -- former river channels that now serve as subterranean streets.
Top Attractions
- Underground Tunnels -- A network of tunnels beneath the city, originally built to divert the river that caused flooding, now used as roads. Walking or driving through them is a surreal experience.
- Jardin de la Union -- The main triangular plaza, lined with cafes and Indian laurel trees, a perfect place to sit and watch the city's life unfold
- Teatro Juarez -- An ornate Porfirian-era theater with a Moorish interior, one of Mexico's most beautiful performance venues
- University of Guanajuato -- The distinctive white main building with its monumental staircase, set against the green hillside
- Museo de las Momias -- The Mummy Museum, housing naturally mummified bodies discovered in the city's cemetery. It is unusual and not for everyone, but it is one of the city's most visited attractions.
- Callejon del Beso -- The "Alley of the Kiss," where balconies on opposite sides are close enough to kiss, accompanied by a local legend of star-crossed lovers
- El Pipila -- A hilltop monument with panoramic views of the city, accessible by funicular
Callejoneadas
One of Guanajuato's signature experiences is the callejoneada -- a roving musical tour through the city's narrow alleys led by estudiantina groups (student musicians dressed in Renaissance-style costumes). Participants follow the musicians through the streets, singing and drinking wine from a bota bag. These typically start at Jardin de la Union in the evening.
The Festival Cervantino
The Festival Internacional Cervantino, held annually in October, is one of Latin America's most important arts festivals. For two to three weeks, the city fills with theater, dance, music, and visual art performances from around the world. Booking accommodation well in advance is essential during the festival.
Food and Drink
- Enchiladas mineras -- The city's signature dish: enchiladas filled with cheese and served with potatoes, carrots, and a guajillo chili sauce
- Guacamayas -- Crusty bolillo bread filled with pork rinds (chicharron) and spicy salsa, a popular street snack
- Cajeta -- Caramelized goat's milk, a regional specialty from nearby Celaya
- Craft beer -- A growing scene with local breweries
Getting There
Bajio International Airport (BJX) near Leon is about 30 minutes from the city. ETN and Primera Plus buses connect Guanajuato to Mexico City (about 5 hours), San Miguel de Allende (1.5 hours), and other regional destinations.
Best Time to Visit
October through May is the dry season with pleasant temperatures. October is particularly exciting due to the Festival Cervantino and Day of the Dead celebrations. The city's elevation (about 2,000 meters) keeps temperatures moderate -- bring a jacket for cool evenings.
