Overview

Welcome to Mexico City

Mexico City -- known locally as CDMX (Ciudad de Mexico) -- is one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the Western Hemisphere. With a population of approximately 9 million in the city proper and over 21 million in the metropolitan area, it is a sprawling megalopolis built on the ruins of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan. The city sits in the Valley of Mexico at about 2,240 meters above sea level, giving it a temperate climate that defies its tropical latitude.

What makes CDMX remarkable is its sheer depth. The city has over 150 museums -- more than any other city in the Americas -- world-renowned restaurants, ancient archaeological sites, vibrant street life, and neighborhoods that each feel like distinct villages.

Top Neighborhoods

  • Centro Historico -- The historic core around the Zocalo, packed with colonial architecture, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Templo Mayor Aztec ruins
  • Roma and Condesa -- Leafy, walkable neighborhoods with art deco architecture, hip cafes, excellent restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere
  • Coyoacan -- A bohemian village-like district, home to the Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul) and charming plazas
  • Polanco -- The upscale district with luxury shopping, fine dining, and the Museo Nacional de Antropologia
  • Xochimilco -- The floating gardens on the city's southern edge, a UNESCO World Heritage site

Must-See Attractions

  • Museo Nacional de Antropologia -- One of the world's great museums, housing the Aztec Sun Stone and artifacts from every major Mesoamerican civilization
  • Chapultepec Castle -- A hilltop castle with panoramic city views and the National History Museum
  • Teotihuacan -- Massive ancient pyramids just an hour from the city
  • Palacio de Bellas Artes -- A stunning art nouveau and art deco building housing murals by Diego Rivera and other Mexican masters
  • Xochimilco -- Float through ancient Aztec canals on colorful trajinera boats

Food Capital of Mexico

CDMX may be the best street food city in the world. Essential eats include:

  • Tacos al pastor -- Spit-roasted pork with pineapple, descended from Lebanese shawarma traditions
  • Tlacoyos -- Thick oval masa cakes stuffed with beans or cheese
  • Tamales and atole -- A classic morning combination from street vendors
  • Quesadillas -- At markets, try them filled with huitlacoche (corn truffle) or flor de calabaza (squash blossom)
  • Tortas -- Mexican sandwiches, particularly from legendary spots in the centro

Getting There

Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) is the primary airport with extensive domestic and international connections. A new airport, Felipe Angeles International Airport (NLU), is located about 45 km north of the city center.

Getting Around

The Metro is extensive and affordable (5 MXN per ride). Metrobus lines cover major corridors. Uber and DiDi are widely used and generally reliable. For the centro historico, walking is the best option.

Best Time to Visit

March through May offers warm, dry weather. The rainy season (June to October) brings afternoon showers but also lush greenery. Day of the Dead (late October to early November) is a spectacular time to visit.

Where to Stay

  • Budget -- Hostels in the Centro Historico or Roma Norte, from $15-25 USD/night
  • Mid-range -- Boutique hotels in Roma, Condesa, or Coyoacan, from $60-120 USD/night
  • Luxury -- High-end hotels in Polanco, from $200+ USD/night
