About El Arco
El Arco de Cabo San Lucas (The Arch of Cabo San Lucas) is a distinctive natural rock formation at the very tip of the Baja California Peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. This granite arch, sculpted by centuries of wind and wave erosion, has become the defining landmark of Los Cabos and one of the most photographed sites in Mexico. The surrounding rock formations at Land's End include dramatic pinnacles, sea caves, and a colony of sea lions.
Key Features
The Arch
The arch itself stands several stories tall, with the ocean surging through its opening. Depending on the tide and time of day, you can sometimes walk beneath it on the sand when conditions allow, though currents here can be dangerous. The best views come from the water by boat.
Lover's Beach (Playa del Amor)
A small, sheltered beach nestled between the rocks on the Sea of Cortez side. The calm water makes it suitable for swimming and snorkeling. Accessible only by water taxi or boat tour.
Divorce Beach (Playa del Divorcio)
On the Pacific side, just around the rocks from Lover's Beach. This beach has beautiful sand but dangerously strong currents and surf -- swimming is not recommended. It is worth visiting for the dramatic scenery.
Sea Lions
A colony of California sea lions inhabits the rocks around Land's End. You can often see (and hear) them lounging on the rocks and swimming in the area.
How to Visit
El Arco is accessible only by water. Options include:
- Water taxi -- Small pangas (open boats) depart from the marina and the beach near the harbor. The ride takes about 10 minutes. Round trip costs approximately 200-400 MXN per person. Drivers can drop you at Lover's Beach and pick you up at an agreed time.
- Glass-bottom boat -- Tours from the marina pass by El Arco and over underwater rock formations where you can see fish through the glass bottom
- Sunset sailing -- Sailing cruises past the arch at golden hour, often with open bar and snacks. A quintessential Cabo experience.
- Kayak or paddleboard -- On calm days, you can paddle from Medano Beach to the arch. Check conditions carefully, as currents near the point can be strong.
- Snorkeling tours -- Some boat tours include snorkeling near the rocks of Land's End
Visiting Tips
- Go at sunset -- The light at golden hour makes the arch glow, and sunset cruises are a highlight of any Cabo trip
- Morning for Lover's Beach -- Visit the beach in the morning before it gets crowded and hot
- Watch the currents -- The waters around Land's End can have strong currents. Do not swim on the Pacific side.
- Bring a waterproof bag -- For your phone and camera on water taxi rides
- Sea lions -- Keep a respectful distance
Getting There
From central Cabo San Lucas, the marina is walkable. Water taxis depart regularly from the marina and from the beach near Pueblo Bonito Rose. No reservations needed for water taxis -- just walk up and negotiate.
Best Time to Visit
El Arco can be visited year-round. December through April offers the best weather. During winter months, you may spot humpback whales in the area from the boat tours. Sunset visits are popular throughout the year.
Plan Your Visit
El Arco is a centerpiece of the Baja Road Trip 5-Day itinerary. Combine a morning at Lover's Beach with an afternoon of sunset sailing.
