What to Expect
From approximately June through September, hundreds of whale sharks -- the world's largest fish, reaching lengths of 12 meters or more -- gather in the warm waters north of Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox to feed on plankton and fish eggs. Regulated snorkeling tours allow small groups to swim alongside these gentle, filter-feeding giants in open water. Despite their enormous size, whale sharks are harmless to humans.
The experience involves a boat ride of 30-60 minutes to reach the feeding areas, followed by guided snorkeling sessions where two swimmers at a time enter the water with a guide alongside a whale shark.
How It Works
Mexican regulations strictly control whale shark encounters:
- Two swimmers plus one guide per whale shark at a time
- No scuba diving -- Snorkeling only
- No touching -- Maintain a safe distance. Do not touch or ride the animals.
- No flash photography -- Underwater cameras without flash are fine
- Life jackets required -- Usually provided
Where to Go
From Cancun / Isla Mujeres
The most popular departure point. Tours leave from Cancun's marina or from Isla Mujeres early in the morning (around 7:00 AM). The boat ride to the feeding area is typically 30-60 minutes.
From Isla Holbox
Holbox is closer to some feeding areas and offers a slightly different experience. Tours depart from the island's pier.
Tips
- Book with a certified operator -- Only licensed operators are permitted to conduct whale shark tours. Ask about their permits.
- Go early in the season -- July and August tend to have the highest concentrations of whale sharks
- Morning departures -- Seas are calmer and encounters are better in the morning
- Motion sickness -- The open-ocean boat ride can be rough. Take medication beforehand if you are prone.
- Fitness level -- You need to be a comfortable swimmer. The open ocean has currents and swells.
- Bring biodegradable sunscreen -- Or wear a rash guard to minimize sunscreen use
Cost
Tours typically cost 2,500-4,500 MXN per person, including boat transport, guide, snorkel equipment, and usually a light lunch or snack. Some tours combine the whale shark encounter with a snorkeling stop at a reef and a visit to Isla Mujeres.
Best Time
Peak season is July and August, though encounters are possible from June through September. The timing depends on plankton concentrations and water conditions.
