What to Expect
Sayulita is one of the best places in Mexico to learn to surf. The town's main beach break produces consistent, gentle waves that are ideal for beginners, with warm water (24-28 degrees Celsius year-round) that eliminates the need for a wetsuit. Multiple surf schools line the beach, offering lessons in English and Spanish with experienced instructors who have you standing on a board within your first session.
A typical beginner lesson lasts about 1-1.5 hours and includes a beach instruction on paddling, popping up, and wave selection before heading into the water.
What a Lesson Includes
- Beach instruction -- 15-20 minutes of technique on the sand, practicing the pop-up motion
- Board and rash guard -- Usually included in the lesson price
- In-water coaching -- The instructor pushes you into waves and gives real-time feedback
- Wave selection -- Learning to read the ocean, a skill that comes with practice
Skill Levels
Beginners
The main break at Sayulita is perfect. Soft, rolling waves in waist-deep water give you plenty of time to pop up. Most people stand on their first session.
Intermediate
The right point break at the north end of the beach offers longer, faster waves for those who have mastered the basics.
Advanced
Puerto Escondido's Zicatela beach (further south on the Oaxaca coast) has one of the most powerful beach breaks in the world. Sayulita itself does not have expert-level waves.
Tips
- Morning sessions -- Winds are calmer in the morning, creating cleaner waves. Book a morning lesson.
- Apply sunscreen early -- Put on reef-safe sunscreen 30 minutes before your lesson so it absorbs
- Hydrate -- Surfing is more tiring than it looks. Drink water before and after.
- Patience -- Even with a great lesson, surfing takes practice. Do not be discouraged if it takes a few tries.
- Board rental -- After your lesson, rent a board and practice on your own. Rental rates are about 200-400 MXN per hour.
Cost
- Group lesson (3-5 people) -- Approximately 500-800 MXN per person for 1-1.5 hours including board
- Private lesson -- Approximately 1,000-1,500 MXN for 1-1.5 hours
- Board rental -- 200-400 MXN per hour, 500-800 MXN per day
- Multi-day packages -- Some schools offer 3-5 day progressive courses at discounted rates
