What to Expect
A trajinera boat ride through Xochimilco is one of Mexico City's most iconic experiences. These colorful, flat-bottomed boats -- each decorated with an arch of flowers spelling a woman's name -- are poled through a network of ancient canals that date back to the Aztec era. As you float, vendor boats pull alongside selling food, drinks, flowers, and crafts, while mariachi and marimba musicians serenade from their own boats.
The experience is festive, social, and uniquely Mexican -- part floating market, part party, part living museum of pre-Hispanic agriculture.
The Experience
Your boatman (trajinero) poles the boat along canals lined with chinampas -- the "floating gardens" that were once the agricultural backbone of the Aztec empire. Along the way:
- Food boats -- Vendors sell elote (corn), quesadillas, tlayudas, and other snacks
- Drink boats -- Sellers offer beer, pulque (fermented agave), and micheladas
- Music boats -- Hire a mariachi or marimba group to play alongside your trajinera (approximately 300-500 MXN per set of songs)
- Other trajineras -- The canals are shared with other boats, creating a floating social scene, especially on weekends
Tips
- Sunday is the most festive day -- But also the most crowded. Weekdays are calmer.
- Bring your own food and drinks -- Many locals bring coolers stocked with food and drinks. This is perfectly acceptable and common.
- Negotiate the price at the dock -- Official rates are posted (approximately 500-800 MXN per hour for the whole boat). Negotiate before boarding.
- Share a boat -- Trajineras hold 15-20 people. Splitting costs with a group makes it very affordable.
- 2-3 hours is ideal -- Enough time to cruise the main canals, eat, and enjoy music
- Use the bathroom before boarding -- Facilities on the canals are limited
Cost
- Trajinera rental -- 500-800 MXN per hour for the entire boat (not per person)
- Food from vendors -- 30-80 MXN per item
- Music -- 300-500 MXN per set of songs
- Guided tours from central CDMX -- 500-1,500 MXN per person including transport
Getting There
Take Metro Line 2 to Tasquena, then the Tren Ligero to Xochimilco station. Walk 15 minutes to Embarcadero Nativitas. Alternatively, take an Uber (30-45 minutes from central CDMX).
Plan Your Visit
Xochimilco is a highlight of the Mexico City 3-Day itinerary. Afternoon visits offer the liveliest atmosphere, especially on weekends.
